There are some places of worship that attain an iconic status in a land. They get featured in literature, songs, movies, folklore and many aspects relating to the daily routines of people. Nestled in a serene spot in Alappuzha is the legendary Arthunkal Church. One of the most important pilgrimage centres in Kerala, the Church is the largest shrine of St. Sebastian in the world. The church is also popularly known as the St. Andrew’s Basilica. Though the church is named after St. Andrews the Apostle, the feast of St. Sebastian is the reason why Arthunkal church has turned out to be one of the most celebrated churches in Kerala.
Arthunkal church has a long history that dates back to the 16th century. The church was the first Parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Alappuzha and was elevated to the status of a Basilica in 2010. Though a sacred place of worship where many devotees come to offer their prayers, what makes the church truly noted is the feast of St. Sebastian, commonly known as the Arthunkal Perunnal. The ten-day event is celebrated in a grand way and is attended by millions of devotees from all parts of the world.
