One of the most popular pilgrimage destinations in the region, the church is a Parish of Syro-Malabar Catholic Church. The patron saint of the Edathua Church is Saint George. 

Built-in 1810, the church today belongs to the Archeparchy of Changanassery. The church is famous as a healing centre, especially for people with mental disorders. The grand altar of the church is surmounted by splendid, majestic artistic design. One of the most popular events associated with the church is the Edathua Perunnal. The Feast of St. George as it is popularly called, the festival attracts devotees from all over South India. On the main festival days, a procession goes around carrying the statue of St. George. As a part of the festival, a trade fair is organized on the grounds of the church.
